As the baby boomer population continues to age and the nursing workforce steadily shrinks, nursing is considered the fastest-growing occupation in the United States. 1. $4,500 Nurse Leadership Scholarship

Loyola University in New Orleans is celebrating its 33 years as a pioneer for online nursing education by awarding five $4,500 scholarships to students enrolling in the university’s online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program. Eligible students must have a BSN degree from a CCNE-accredited program, an unrestricted RN license in the United States, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and three undergraduate credit hours in statistics. In addition to filling out the online scholarship form, applicants need to submit a 200 to 300-word essay describing how an MSN degree will help further their career.

2. Adolph Van Pelt Special Fund for Indian Scholarships

Deadline: February 1st

On a yearly basis, the Association on American Indian Affairs offers undergraduates in all majors the Adolph Van Pelt Scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each. The scholarship is awarded to Native American applicants who demonstrate merit and financial need for tuition assistance. For students who are awarded the scholarship, the Association will send $750 directly to the university for the fall semester, but students must provide a copy of the semester’s satisfactory grades before obtaining the second $750.

3. Akron General Medical Center Service League Nursing Scholarship

Deadline: March 1st

Funded by the Akron General Medical Center, the Service League Nursing Scholarship was created to provide tuition assistance to Ohio nursing students regardless of gender, race, age, nationality, religion, or disability. Applicants for the scholarship must be accepted by an accredited college of nursing to pursue a BSN degree in Ohio and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Following an in-person interview, scholarships are awarded in April at the Service League Luncheon Meeting.

4. Alice Newell Joslyn Medical Fund

Each academic year, the BECA Foundation Inc. offers Alice Newell Joslyn Medical Fund scholarships from $500 to $2,000 to Latino students who are entering one of the health care professions by pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree in a related health field. Eligible applicants for the award must be attending a high school or university in San Diego County at the time of application, be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and demonstrate financial need.

5. American Cancer Society’s Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing

Established by the American Cancer Society, the Doctoral Scholarship in Cancer Nursing is designed for graduate students who are actively pursuing a doctoral degree in the field of cancer research, nursing education, health care administration, or clinical nursing practice. In order to receive the two-year $15,000 scholarship, eligible applicants must have a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and demonstrate satisfactory acceptance into a doctoral program to begin a career as a nursing scientist.

6. Appalachian District Nurses Association Scholarship

From an endowment from the Appalachian District Nurses Association, the South Carolina Nurses Foundation (SCNF) awards an annual scholarship to nursing students who are pursuing an associate’s, bachelor’s, or advanced degree in the field. Eligible students for the scholarship must be attending an accredited college or university in one of the four Appalachia District counties, which are Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee.

7. Bethesda Lutheran Communities Scholarship for College Students

The Bethesda Lutheran Communities Scholarship is offered to college students and seminarians who are preparing for careers that will positively enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 8. Betty Crim Endowed Nursing Scholarship

In honor of Betty Crim, a former respected nursing faculty member, the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing provides two or more $1,500 scholarships to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Eligible students must have completed their first clinical nursing course, meet the scholastic standards of the School, and demonstrate financial need. 9. Colon Furr Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Deadline: September 25th

Annually, the American Legion Department of North Carolina offers the Colon Furr Memorial Nursing Scholarship in honor of the late Commander Colon Furr. The $600 award is available to any North Carolina residents who are enrolled in a one-year Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program, a two-year Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to become a Registered Nurse in the state. 10. Dermatology Nurses’ Association New Nurse Educational Scholarship

The Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA) offers the New Nurse Education Scholarship to encourage members of the Association to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN). Candidates for the $2,000 scholarships must be an active DNA associate member, be active in community service projects, and be accepted into an accredited nursing program leading to certification. 11. Dorothy Willits Hallowell Nursing Scholarship

The Anna T. Jeanes Foundation offers the Dorothy Willits Hallowell Nursing Scholarship to high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a profession in nursing and have been accepted into an institution that houses an accredited professional nursing program. All applicants must be residents of the Delaware Valley, a Quaker enrolled in a Society of the Friend’s high school, and have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients of the scholarship will be awarded $1,250 per semester for the first two years and $5,000 per semester for the next two years of undergraduate study.

13. Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship Fund

The Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship Fund was created by the American Legion to assist registered nurses with advancing their education to fulfill leadership roles in supervision, administration, or teaching. Upon completion of the degree, students must have prospects for employment in full-time positions in lung and respiratory care within a hospital, clinic, or medical health department. 14. Ellen Burge Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing Scholarship

Dr. Fletcher Burge and his wife Gloria have established this scholarship fund at the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing in memory of their late daughter, Ellen. In order to honor her unwavering commitment to the care of critically premature babies, the scholarship is awarded to students beginning a senior year nursing practicum within a neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Missouri Health Care Center. Since all full-time students enrolled in the Sinclair School of Nursing are potential candidates, there is no need to apply for the individual scholarship.

15. Henry Dunant Scholarship for Male Nursing Students

Funded by the Henry Dunant Scholarship Committee, this private scholarship was established to help undergraduate nursing students who are currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program in the United States and need financial assistance. As its name suggest, the scholarship is awarded specifically to male students of any ethnicity who have good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants are required to provide proof of acceptance in a nationally recognized nursing program and submit a one to two-page essay on the history of men in nursing, including the Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Dunant.

16. Melissa Anne Centrella Scholarship Foundation

The MAC Scholarship Foundation awards nine annual scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, each in honor of Melissa Anne Centrella, a Nutley High School graduate who lost her 20-year fight against Dystonia in June of 2002. Since medicine was so important to her everyday life, the scholarship is granted to New Jersey undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in Nursing, Health Sciences, or Medicine. 18. National Japanese American Citizens League Headquarters Scholarship

Each year, the National Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) awards scholarships to students who are planning to attend either an accredited undergraduate or graduate program to study full-time. 19. Nurse Corps Scholarship Program

The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program (NCSP) is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide tuition assistance to nursing students in exchange for the student working in an eligible Critical Shortage Facility (CSF) after degree completion for at least two years. The scholarship covers all costs for tuition, books, clinical supplies, and eligible fees, as well as provides a monthly stipend of nearly $1,300. Established by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Phoebe Pember Memorial Scholarship is awarded to members of the national society who are female lineal descendants of soldiers in the Confederate military forces. 24. Veterans Affairs Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Program

Supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Program is intended to assist doctoral level nurses with assistance to cover the costs of education and research. Fellows are given $25,000 to $35,000 during the two-year full-time or three-year part-time program to complete a doctoral research dissertation on a health care topic that is relevant to the military veteran population. Although fellows are strongly encouraged to seek VA employment after completion, it is not required.

25. Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant Program

The Maryland Higher Education Commission offers the Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant award to nursing students for amounts that range from $4,500 to $19,000. Applicants must be enrolled at a two-year or four-year Maryland university as a full-time degree-seeking student. In addition to completing the online application form, recipients of the grant are required to sign a promissory note that he or she will fulfill the nursing service obligation for each academic year that tuition assistance was received.
